作品情報：
本作は、奥村靫正 氏が手がけた装丁のオリジナルデザインを、ご本人がシルクスクリーンで再構築する新作のプロジェクト。
当時、手貼りで制作された原画をそのまま活かした作品です。テレビのモニターを思わせる背景として、ラメの入ったシルバーとドット柄の水色をアレンジしました。発色、質感、そして力強い存在感が印象的な仕上がりとなっています。
エディション番号とサインに加え、タイトルもすべて奥村氏による直筆です。

奥村靫正・本人による作品解説：
本シルクスクリーン作品では、文庫版『ニューロマンサー』とは異なり、人物のトリミングに原画本来の構図を活かしています。
また、CMYKの4版に加え、背景にはラメ入りシルバーとドット柄の水色の2版を使用しました。シルバーは上から下へとグラデーションを施しており、立体感を演出しました。
さらに、「NEUROMANCER」の英字タイトルを配置しましたが、これは私がYMOのアルバム『テクノデリック』（1981年）をデザインした際に制作したフォントを使用しています。

奥村靫正・本人によるカバーデザイン解説：
ウィリアム・ギブスンの『ニューロマンサー』は1984年に刊行され、ネビュラ賞、フィリップ・K・ディック賞、ヒューゴー賞を同時に受賞し、「サイバーパンク」というジャンルを確立した金字塔的SF作品です。
ウィリアム・ギブスンは私が手がけた日本版文庫のカバーデザインに非常に驚いたようで、「自分のイメージからも突き抜けているヴィジュアルに感動した」というコメントをいただきました。
そんなある日、私のもとに突然ギブスンから電話がかかってきました。「今、近くまで来ているので、これから会えないか」という内容でした。来日の際、わざわざ訪れてきてくれたのですが、当時の私は非常に多忙で、残念ながらその日は急な対応ができませんでした。事前に連絡をもらえていたら、会えたかもしれなかったので残念です。
この作品はデジタルな質感を出すため、当時存在していた、テレビモニターの映像をモザイク画像に変換してプリントできるホビー端末を使用しています。出力した画像を切り刻み、手作業で貼り込んで構成しました。まだMacintosh IIが発売される以前の時代です。
その後も私は、ウィリアム・ギブスン著『カウント・ゼロ』（1987年）、『モナリザ・オーヴァドライヴ』（1989年）、『クローム襲撃』（1987年）、そしてギブスン作品も収録したブルース・スターリング編のサイバーパンク・アンソロジー『ミラーシェード』（1988年・いずれもハヤカワ文庫）の装丁デザインを手がけています。

Artwork Information
This new work is based on a book cover design originally created by Yuzumasa Okumura, which he has personally reconstructed as a “contemporary work” using silkscreen printing.
The piece makes full use of the original artwork, which was created by hand at the time. The background, reminiscent of a television screen, features a combination of glittery silver and light blue polka dots. The result is a striking piece with impressive color, texture, and a powerful presence.
In addition to the edition number and signature, the title is also handwritten by Mr. Okumura.

Artist’s Commentary by Yuzumasa Okumura:
In this silkscreen print, unlike the Bunko edition of “Neuromancer,” the cropping of the figures utilizes the original composition of the artwork.
In addition to the four CMYK plates, I used two additional plates for the background: a glitter-infused silver and a light blue with a dotted pattern. The silver features a gradient running from top to bottom, creating a sense of depth.
Furthermore, I incorporated the English title “NEUROMANCER,” using a font I created when designing YMO’s album “Technodelic” (1981).

Cover Design Commentary by Yuzumasa Okumura:
William Gibson’s “Neuromancer” was published in 1984 and won the Nebula Award, the Philip K. Dick Award, and the Hugo Award simultaneously, establishing the “cyberpunk” genre as a landmark work of science fiction.
William Gibson seemed very surprised by the cover design I created for the Japanese paperback edition, and he commented, “I was moved by the visuals, which went far beyond what I had imagined.”
One day, I suddenly received a call from Gibson. He said, “I’m in the area right now—could we meet up?” He had gone out of his way to visit me when he came to Japan, but I was extremely busy at the time, so unfortunately, I couldn’t accommodate him on such short notice that day. It’s a shame—if he had contacted me in advance, we might have been able to meet.
To achieve a digital texture for this work, I used a hobbyist device that was available at the time—one capable of converting images from a TV monitor into mosaic patterns for printing. I cut up the printed images and assembled them by hand. This was back before the Macintosh II had even been released.
After that, I also worked on William Gibson’s “Count Zero” (1987), “Mona Lisa Overdrive” (1989), “Burning Chrome” (1987), and the cyberpunk anthology “Mirroredshades” (1988), edited by Bruce Sterling and featuring Gibson’s works (all published by Hayakawa Bunko).
